What You Need To Learn About Cats

Several jobs come included with the package when you adopt a new cat. Feeding and entertaining your pet are the obvious two, but you also need to focus on keeping them clean. Cleaning a cat can be an extremely daunting experience because cats hate water and they usually have claws. Use the tips below to keep your feline healthy and clean all year around.

Be sure to have your pet cat spayed or neutered by the time it is six months old. A spayed or neutered cat is a more satisfactory pet because it is calmer, quieter and more likely to stay home. Neutered male cats do not spray urine to mark their territory. This is definitely a plus when it comes to cat ownership.

Cats can get into even the tiniest of spaces. If they have to wear a collar then there may be a risk because your cat could end up getting stuck. A breakaway style collar will literally “break away” if pulled too tight. It can really be a life saver for your cat.

An indoor cat who gets a taste of the outdoors will forever want to go outside. If you know your cat will always be an indoor cat, do your best to keep them from sneaking out. You can try to train your cat to stay in your yard when you are outside.

Get a scratching post to keep your cat from tearing up your carpet. If you can, get a post that does not have the same type of carpet that is on the floor of your home, so your cat doesn’t associate the two. Instead, get a post that is covered in cardboard, sisal, or thick rope.

Do not isolate the litter box in a distant place. Put the litter box in a secluded area, and make sure that it is not near the cat’s food. Also, minimize the smell by making sure it is a well ventilated area. Your cat will certainly appreciate your efforts, and you will too!

Get your cat sprayed and neutered to prevent diseases and infections that form in the reproductive system. This can also help reduce the chance for overpopulation in the country, as just one male who is not neutered can produce up to half a million offspring over the course of his life.

It is important to only feed your kitten food specifically made for kittens. Kitten food contains more fat and protein to help keep your growing cats body healthy. Adult cat food is leaner and is not specially formulated the same way as the kitten food. Your kitten will grow really fast in a short time-frame, so it is important that they eat right.

If you want to have your cat for many years, it is a good idea to keep them indoors. While a cat may enjoy going outside, it is statistically proven that outdoor cats live shorter lives than indoor cats. There are dangers to a cat that spends time outside, not least of all other animals.

Handle your kitten often. The longer your cat is handled as a kitten, the more readily they will accept being handled when they are grown, especially around their paws. This is important as all cats will have to visit the vet occasionally, and this process is much easier and less stressful if the cat is accustomed to being handled. It will also make grooming and nail trimming much easier.

A tablecloth should be made for your cats. Cats will sometimes pluck food from the bowl and enjoy it straight off the ground. This makes quite a mess. You can get a pet mat or use a piece of old fabric to put under it for easy cleanup.

If your cat has to have a surgery such as being spayed or neutered, they will need rest when they come home. It is hard to keep a cat from jumping up on furniture, but necessary to avoid pulling out stitches. Designate an area in your house for your cat to recuperate where they will be less likely to injure themselves, until they are healed enough to roam free.

Give cat box liners a try. These may not work for everyone, but they can be helpful if they work for you. Line the litter box with one of these liners, and then put cat litter in as usual. If it works correctly, you should be able to gather the liner and dispose of the litter. Unfortunately, sometimes cats just scratch the liner to pieces as they are doing their business.

Brush your cat’s coat often. Brushing improves the circulation of your cat and helps spread natural oils in the fur. It will also minimize hair loss. This avoids the hairball problem, which may lead to choking and a buildup of hair in the stomach.

Never reprimand your cat for missing the litter box. Many times, this is caused by failure to properly clean or place the litter box. Punishing your cat may cause him to become afraid of you or their litter box.

While it is perfectly normal for a dog to pant a lot of the time, you should be alarmed if you notice your cat doing it. It may only be a small case of anxiety, but in some cases it is something much more serious like cardiovascular or respiratory distress.

If you are thinking about adding another cat to your home, you need to set aside a couple of weeks where you let the animals get used to being around each other. They may hide from one another, hiss, or even swat each other. Eventually, they become used to each other and are comfortable together.

Now, not only can your cat be the biggest and baddest feline in the neighborhood, it can also be the cleanest cat in town. You might get lucky and find a cat that doesn’t mind the water and remains calm while covered in soap. Keep these tips in mind while you proceed and don’t let the past become involved.
